So what do you get when you join, exactly?

We’ve been getting emails from Rochester women who want to know more about the EWGA. What will you get when you join?

You get golf!

The purpose of our association is summed up by the EWGA tagline: Connect, Learn, Play, Belong.

Our EWGA chapter gives Rochester women golfers opportunities to learn the game of golf, play the game of golf, and meet other women who also love to play. It’s also a great way to network–the majority of our members are area professionals.

In addition to the soft benefits, women who join our chapter are eligible for a number of discounts.

Discounts on women’s golf services, products, education, rounds

We did the math, and it was an eye-opener.

By joining EWGA, you receive up to $270 in savings on golf-related products and services this year, right here in Rochester.

  • Seven EWGA Chapter Clinics @ $5 off per clinic: you save $35
  • Two EWGA Chapter Instructional Series @ $25 off per clinic: you save $50
  • USGA Handicap Index through the EWGA Golf Life Management System (GLMS), free with your membership: $30 value
  • Joining a league? Save $25
  • Golf fitness class discount: save $20
  • Need golf shoes? A-GAME Sports discount on women’s golf shoes: up to $50
  • GolfTEC lesson package: 20% off: $60 (double the national GolfTEC discount)

And that’s just here in town. There are other discounts negotiated by EWGA national (check their site often as this list grows all the time). Examples: 25% off Tail Activewear women’s golf clothing; 10% off Sporty Chic golf clothing; 10% off Liberty Mutual auto or home insurance; 10% discount on selected Golfsmith products; 15% discount at 1800 flowers.

[Members: to see these discounts, you need to go to the EWGA national site and log onto the Members Clubhouse (formerly calls Members Only). Do check it out if you haven't, recently -- they've added quite a few additional discounts.]

Given today’s uncertain economy, it’s nice to know that joining EWGA is an investment in your game.

EWGA Championship

Another benefit of joining is that you can participate in the EWGA Championship Tournament: the largest women’s amateur tournament in the world.

The EWGA Championship, which includes stroke and scramble team format play, is open only to EWGA members. It’s a flighted tournament — which means women of any skill level can play.

That makes it a great way to experience competitive golf!

Any member of our chapter can play in the first round, our Chapter Championship, July 17 at Mill Creek. Two women from each of the four stroke play flights, and one scramble team, can advance to the regionals on August 21 in Springfield, Mass.

Connecting with other women golfers: Priceless!

Joining the EWGA also enables you to connect with other women golfers. Through our Fairway Friends mentoring program, leagues, golf events, networking events, and the EWGA Championship, you have the opportunity to form business connections and lasting friendships, all through the great game of golf!

Questions about joining? Click here, fill out the contact form, and our membership chair will be happy to drop you an email or give you a call.

Participating in the EWGA Championship is one benefit of membership, and you might even win a trophy like one of these!

Member get a Member just got better :-)

As we posted previously, EWGA members who recruit other women golfers to join our association are automatically entered into a contest featuring some great prizes, many donated by our Member Get A Member (MGAM) program sponsor, Nike Golf.

Well guess what: in addition to the prizes offered by EWGA national, we’re holding our own chapter-level contest.

Our Chapter recruit-a-member contest will be open to anyone who recruits even ONE new member between now and September 1, 2010.

It couldn’t be easier: bring a girlfriend into the EWGA, and you’ll be entered into a prize drawing at our Season End event on September 18.

So if you’re thinking of encouraging a friend to try the EWGA — now’s the time to go for it!

EWGA Member Benefit: you get a golf handicap

Do you have a handicap?

If you’re relatively new to golf — or have only played casual golf — the answer is probably “no.”

Guess what?

You should!

Having a handicap can make the game of golf more interesting and enjoyable. Handicaps let you:

  • Track your progress. As you work on your game, your handicap will go down, giving you concrete feedback on your success.
  • Understand courses better. Each course you play is also rated according to difficulty. Once you know your handicap, you get a better idea of how you can expect to score on that course.
  • Make competitions more fair. Having a handicap lets you play against golfers of any skill level. Suppose a person with a high handicap is playing with a person with a low handicap. By “giving strokes” to the high handicapper (essentially subtracting strokes from that person’s score) you “even the playing field.” You make it possible for the high handicapper to win the game, just by playing a round that is good for her skill level.
  • Play in more events. Some tournaments and leagues require all players to have a handicap. (The EWGA Championship tournament is one example; some of our chapter leagues also require players to maintain a handicap.)

So how do you get a handicap?

It’s not hard at all! And as an EWGA member, you receive a USGA Handicap Index through the EWGA Golf Life Management System (GLMS), free with your membership (a $30 value).

Once you’ve signed up for the GLMS, just log on after you’ve played either a 9- or 18-hole round and key in your scores. The GLMS system does all the rest.

You do have 2 responsibilities . . .

Like many other aspects of the game of golf, handicapping is an honors system.

To be fair to other players, you need to try to make the best score you can, every hole of every round you play — and you must post scores for every round you play.

Do that, and your handicap index will be accurate, so that when you do play in competitions, they’re fair for everyone who participates.

New EWGA members: click here for information on how to activate your GLMS account.

Golf mentoring program helps Rochester women golfers learn the game

Are you a Rochester woman interested in learning the game of golf?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a golf mentor to help you?

We think so, too! That’s why the Rochester Region, NY Chapter of the EWGA is thrilled about the 2010 EWGA Fairway Friends golf mentoring program.

EWGA members who sign up for the Fairway Friends program will be assigned to an experienced woman golfer who can help answer golf-related questions.

Your mentor will also play golf with you at least a couple of times this summer to help you learn your way around a golf course. And she’ll help you identify EWGA activities you might want to participate in — so you can meet other women golfers and work on your game.

Program mentors — and “mentees” — also receive free gifts

But wait! There’s more! :-) The Fairway Friends program sponsor, Be the Ball 4U, is giving a free ball marker and divot tool to all Fairway Friends mentors. Fairway Friends mentees receive a free golf accessories pouch.

Sound interesting? We’ll have a Fairway Friends sign-up sheet at our March 20 Kick Off event at Midvale Country Club.

Or drop us a note using the form below, and we’ll contact you about the program as we get closer to the golf season.

Women's golf in Rochester: getting connected

With the 2010 golf season just around the corner (yes, we know about all the snow on the ground — but spring is on the way, we promise!) are you looking for ways to meet other Rochester women golfers?

If so, you’ve come to the right place! One of the main goals of the Rochester chapter of the EWGA is to help women golfers connect.

Here are some of the ways you can meet other Rochester women golfers through the EWGA:

  • Join an EWGA weekly league. We’re finalizing our 2010 women’s golf leagues right now, and will have sign-up sheets available at our March 20 Kick-Off at Midvale Country Club.  Many of our chapter members have made great golf friends by playing in leagues!
  • Participate in our weekend travel league. This league is a great way to play a variety of Rochester-area courses — and meet a cross-section of our chapter membership — without a big up-front commitment.
  • Sign up for chapter events. We sponsor a number of tournaments and other events throughout the year, and we’d love for you to join us!
  • Take a golf clinic. Meet other women golfers and work on your game. It’s like holing two chips with only one stroke!
  • Compete in our EWGA Chapter Championship. This tournament — the largest amateur women’s championship golf tournament in the world — provides opportunities for you to meet not only Rochester golfers, but (if you advance — and you know you can!) women from other EWGA chapters as well. And it’s a flighted tournament, so you can play regardless of your skill level.

So if you’re looking to meet other Rochester women golfers, our EWGA chapter has just what you need! Why not click here to join today?

Former member? Thinking of re-joining?

We just got some great news from national: as a special incentive, EWGA is waiving the $25 reinstatement fee for former members to join at Chapter Kick-Off events.

This means you can more affordably renew your membership.

So if you’re a former member thinking of rejoining, please plan to join us on Saturday March 20 at Midvale Country Club, 10:00 am to noon. See you then!

What is a GolfTEC swing analysis?

One of the benefits of joining the Executive Women’s Golf Association is the discounts. EWGA members get discounts on a variety of golf-related products and services, such as 10% off GolfSmith orders and and — for when you’re planning a golf vacation — discounts on greens fees at Troon resorts.

Here at the Rochester Region, NY chapter we also offer a number of discounts to exclusive to our own chapter members. Members get discounts on our leagues and clinics, for instance, and on registration to many of our events.

In fact, if you take advantage of all of our Chapter discounts alone, you will more than cover your membership dues!

EWGA discounts from GolfTEC

Our Rochester GolfTEC also offers a special discount to our chapter members: 20% off GolfTEC lessons — twice the 10% EWGA discount GolfTEC offers on a national basis.

And, as you’ve learned from recent e-newsletters and website articles, GolfTEC is offering you a free swing analysis at our February 25 GolfTEC open house.

For the swing analysis, GolfTEC uses swing and ball flight technology to capture data about your current golf swing as the basis for developing a plan to improve.

If you’re interested in going further, you can sign up for GolfTEC lessons — again, taking advantage of the 20% EWGA member discount.

GolfTEC lessons also take advantage of technology. For instance, you can view your lessons over the Internet, including full-motion video drills, reference materials, and audio clips from your instructor telling you precisely what your key thoughts are for each position in your swing.

That means you can practice your game any time, from your home or office.

Click here to learn more about GolfTEC Rochester.

And if you want to attend our GolfTEC Open House on February 25th, there’s still time. Click here for more information and to RSVP.

Dear EWGA Members. Did you know you can win great prizes by recruiting new members?

Pretty cool, wouldn’t you say?

Under the EWGA 2010 Member-Get-A-Member (MGAM) Campaign, sponsored by Nike Golf, if you recruit at least 2 people, you’ll be entered in a Chapter drawing for one of several unique Nike gifts :-)

Invite golfers to join

If you “recruit a threesome,” you are entered in a national drawing for one of 25 complimentary EWGA memberships.

If you “recruit a foursome” you are considered a top recruiter for our Chapter. You qualify for a Nike shoulder tote and are entered in a drawing for one of ten Nike Golf drivers.

Recruit 12 or more new members and you are entered in a drawing for a custom fitting for a new set of Nike Golf Clubs at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. Airfare and hotel included! You also win a Nike golf bag and will be recognized at this year’s EWGA national conference.

The 2010 MGAM Campaign runs through December 31, 2010.

It’s easy to enter the contest. All you do is:

  1. Download a membership application from the EWGA national site;
  2. Write your name in the space marked “How did you hear about EWGA/EWGA Member” (about 2/3 down the application);
  3. Give the form to the woman you’ve recruited to submit to national.

Bring friends to our March 20 Kick-Off!

You can also invite your golfing girlfriends to our 2010 Kick-Off Luncheon on March 20. We’ll have membership applications there for you and your friends to fill out.

Makes it even easier!

Only current paid members are eligible to win: you must be a member at the time the new member joins, and a member-in-good-standing at the time the prizes are awarded.

So tell all your golfing girlfriends and co-workers about the EWGA experience –  and good luck in the MGAM contest!
