One of the great things about the EWGA is that we provide opportunities to help beginning women golfers learn the game.
That’s why we’re so pleased to have a beginner’s golf league again this year.
And the good news? We still have a couple of spots left in the league!
This six-week league runs May 25 – June 29, and costs $105 for EWGA members and $125 non-members. Carts are included. The league will play at
Champion Hills, the newest private course in the Rochester area, under the guidance of LPGA Pro Darlene Sommer .
The first week will feature an introduction to the course and other players, orientation and the opportunity to play a few holes. Weeks 2 – 6 will be 9 holes regular stroke play.
Players tee off beginning at 5:30. USGA Handicaps (GHIN or GLMS) are encouraged, but not required.

Looking for a fantastic golf getaway and competitive challenge this summer?
Then how about this: the EWGA is launching a new competition, the Match Play Champion’s Cup — and our chapter is participating.
What is the EWGA Match Play Champions Cup?
The Match Play Champions Cup is an inaugural regional competitive event that will be used as a pilot program to roll out on a national level in 2011.
When: July 31 and August 1, 2010
Where: Crystal Springs Golf Resort, Hamburg, NJ
Details: 2 nights accommodations, 3 rounds of golf (36 holes Saturday, 18 holes Sunday), Saturday night dinner, and Sunday awards barbeque.
Cost: Approximately $535 based on double occupancy, $405 based on four to a room
The EWGA envisions this competition as the organization’s second official major national competition, complementing the EWGA National Championship.
Th Match Play Champions Cup will be a weekend event with 36 holes being played the first day, and 18 holes the second day. The format will consist of Team Match Play competitions held over 3 rounds. Winning Teams will advance through the brackets toward the Match Play Championship Finals. Teams losing in a particular round play in consolation matches, so every team that attends will play all 3 rounds over course of the event.
In this inaugural year, there will be 8 teams with 16 players each. Many of these Teams may consist of several chapters. Chapters may be allocated between 5 and 16 spots on a given Team. Once EWGA national receives all entry forms, it will set the teams.

Eligibility Requirements
The Match Play Champion’s Cup is designed to be one of the EWGA’s most competitive tournaments and to draw from our lowest handicap players and most competitive golfers across the organization.
To be eligible to participate, you must be an EWGA member in good standing, and have an official USGA or GLMS Handicap Index of 25.0 or less.

We’re done — we think — tweaking our new forum!
As we announced in our latest email, we’ve created an online forum where our EWGA chapter members can connect with other members to set up “golf dates.”
This is a private forum. You need to register to post to it — or even view it.
To register, follow the link under FORUM on the left hand sidebar.
And please let us know if you run into problems! This is all new functionality for our site. We think we’ve worked out all the snags. But then, we also thought we were going to play scratch golf last weekend ha ha ha ha ha

 The Champion Hills club house.
Does it get any better than this? Nine-hole fun scramble with great wine and food — at Rochester’s newest private golf course?
We think not!
Let’s start with the course.
Champion Hills Country Club
Champion Hills County Club is a beautiful, 9-hole private golf course that just opened this spring. It was designed by Golf Course Architect Barry L. Jordan, who, according to the Champion Hills website, “believes that a golf course that exhibits sound design principles, compositional beauty, and thrilling golf, is the product of an Architect’s ability to arrange its features and forms in both an artistic and functional manner.”

The Golf
What better setting for a round of golf? Our Wine & Nine will feature a nine-hole fun scramble. Carts are included with the registration fee.
You’ll be one of the first in the Rochester area to play this great new course!
Our event will also feature food, wine, and prizes.
Are you ready?
Mark your calendar! This event is Friday, May 21. Tee-off is at 5:00, registration begins at 4:30 pm. Champion Hills is located at 675 Championship Dr. Victor, NY.

Think learning golf rules is boring?
Think again!
Our Rules, Etiquette, and Handicap Clinic (Tuesday, April 27, 6-7:30 pm, Ravenwood Golf Club) is going to be FUN.
How much fun? We caught up with PGA Pro Todd Riolo, who is teaching the rules and etiquette portion of this clinic to ask him what he’s got in mind.
(Wendy Bolton, our Handicap Chair, will host the handicap presentation after Todd finishes his portion of the clinic.)
Hands-On = Faster Grasp of Rules Procedures
One thing that caught our interest: Todd will be taking us right out onto the course for hands-on demonstrations of golf rules.
Why do this? Because seeing how golf rules are applied in a real-world situation makes it easier to understand them.
“It’s not always easy to understand from someone’s description, or from a diagram on a board,” Todd explains. “What does it mean to take two club lengths? What direction do you take them? When you actually see someone demonstrate procedures, you really understand how to do them yourself.”
Todd emphasizes that he won’t be covering little-used or obscure rules, just the ones he calls “every day rules of golf:” the rules we use all the time when we play — or try to. “You’d be surprised how many people don’t know the rules very well,” he says.
Even the pros need help, sometimes!
That includes pros, Todd adds. At this year’s Friday round of the Augusta Masters Tournament, for instance, Ernie Els nearly took a ball drop when he didn’t need to (he thought his ball had gone into a water hazard on #15 but it hadn’t — it was still in play). Had he not been stopped by fans, he would have taken an unnecessary 1-stroke penalty.
“Rules are there to help the player,” Todd explains. “If you know the rules, you can take advantage of them to help you put up the best possible score.”
Another situation Todd sees all the time: people think it’s okay to set rules, as long as everybody in their group agrees. “Just because everyone else in your foursome says ‘yes’ doesn’t mean you’re following the rules.”
On the contrary: you can incur a penalty just for agreeing to break a golf rule!
A supportive setting
Todd is also committed to helping clinic attendees feel comfortable. “I want people to ask questions.” Sometimes people worry that their question is “dumb” — but they shouldn’t. “The person sitting next to you probably has the same question,” he says.
Have a rules or etiquette question you’d rather not ask in front of the group?
No problem! Just write it down and give it to Todd before the clinic starts, and he’ll cover it anonymously during the class.
There will be dinner specials. Wine specials!
We said it was going to be fun, and we meant it!
Ravenwood — which has a completely new and gorgeous bar and dining room — will be offering dinner and wine specials to clinic attendees.
It’ll be a great chance to socialize and enjoy one of Rochester’s premiere public golf facilities.
And . . this clinic is free to EWGA members
Not only that, but we’re now making it easier than ever to register. Just enter your name, phone number, and email address below.
(Non-members, if you register using the form below, please bring your $10 payment the evening of the clinic.)
Personal trainer Helene Sallerson emphasized proper form during the Rochester EWGA women's golf fitness class. Her routines included many core strength exercises like this one, for abdominals.
We’re almost there!
This coming Saturday is the sixth and final week of the EWGA Golf Fitness Class with personal trainer Helene Sallerson.
And what a great experience it’s been! Helene has been fantastic. She’s helped us strengthen all the major muscle groups we need to swing a club, from core and upper body to glutes.
Yes, we found ourselves a bit stiff and sore the next morning — especially those first few weeks. But we’ve also seen results — and we’ve learned some great new fitness techniques and habits.
And just in time for the 2010 golf season, too!
Our golf clinics, described here, are an inexpensive way to tune up your game.
But what if you want more in-depth help?
No problem. Just sign up for our Golf Instructional Series, a program that provides four hours total of instruction offered over two sessions. You get “hands on” instruction in a small group setting — enabling the pros to give you more personal attention and focus than in our clinics.
We’re offering two Instructional Series programs this year.
