Inaugural Match Play Champion's Cup: your chance to make EWGA history!

Wild Turkey course at Crystal Springs Golf Resort

View of Wild Turkey, one of the seven golf courses at the Crystal Springs Golf Resort.

Looking for a fantastic golf getaway and competitive challenge this summer?

Then how about this: the EWGA is launching a new competition, the Match Play Champion’s Cup — and our chapter is participating.

What is the EWGA Match Play Champions Cup?

The Match Play Champions Cup is an inaugural regional competitive event that will be used as a pilot program to roll out on a national level in 2011.

When: July 31 and August 1, 2010
Where: Crystal Springs Golf Resort, Hamburg, NJ
Details: 2 nights accommodations, 3 rounds of golf (36 holes Saturday, 18 holes Sunday), Saturday night dinner, and Sunday awards barbeque.
Cost: Approximately $535 based on double occupancy, $405 based on four to a room

The EWGA envisions this competition as the organization’s second official major national competition, complementing the EWGA National Championship.

Th Match Play Champions Cup will be a weekend event with 36 holes being played the first day, and 18 holes the second day. The format will consist of Team Match Play competitions held over 3 rounds. Winning Teams will advance through the brackets toward the Match Play Championship Finals.  Teams losing in a particular round play in consolation matches, so every team that attends will play all 3 rounds over course of the event.

In this inaugural year, there will be 8 teams with 16 players each. Many of these Teams may consist of several chapters. Chapters may be allocated between 5 and 16 spots on a given Team. Once EWGA national receives all entry forms, it will set the teams.

Click here to download a flier with additional details about the format and process for choosing teams.

Eligibility Requirements

The Match Play Champion’s Cup is designed to be one of the EWGA’s most competitive tournaments and to draw from our lowest handicap players and most competitive golfers across the organization.

To be eligible to participate, you must be an EWGA member in good standing, and have an official USGA or GLMS Handicap Index of 25.0 or less.

Are you ready to commit to the Inaugural Champion’s Cup?

In order to make this a success, we really need to obtain firm commitments from you!

Time for some fun! Wine & Nine at Champion Hills!

Club House at Champion Hills Golf Club

The Champion Hills club house.

Does it get any better than this? Nine-hole fun scramble with great wine and food — at Rochester’s newest private golf course?

We think not!

Let’s start with the course.

Champion Hills Country Club

Champion Hills County Club is a beautiful, 9-hole private golf course that just opened this spring. It was designed by Golf Course Architect Barry L. Jordan, who, according to the Champion Hills website, “believes that a golf course that exhibits sound design principles, compositional beauty, and thrilling golf, is the product of an Architect’s ability to arrange its features and forms in both an artistic and functional manner.”

The Golf

What better setting for a round of golf? Our Wine & Nine will feature a nine-hole fun scramble. Carts are included with the registration fee.

You’ll be one of the first in the Rochester area to play this great new course!

Our event will also feature food, wine, and prizes.

Are you ready?

Mark your calendar! This event is Friday, May 21. Tee-off is at 5:00, registration begins at 4:30 pm. Champion Hills is located at 675 Championship Dr. Victor, NY.

The cost is $50 to EWGA members and $60 to non-members.

Deadline for registration is May 13, so download your registration form here today.

EWGA members feelin' the burn :-)

Personal trainer Helene Sallerson with a Rochester EWGA member

Personal trainer Helene Sallerson emphasized proper form during the Rochester EWGA women's golf fitness class. Her routines included many core strength exercises like this one, for abdominals.

We’re almost there!

This  coming Saturday is the sixth and final week of the EWGA Golf Fitness Class with personal trainer Helene Sallerson.

And what a great experience it’s been! Helene has been fantastic. She’s helped us strengthen all the major muscle groups we need to swing a club, from core and upper body to glutes.

Yes, we found ourselves a bit stiff and sore the next morning — especially those first few weeks. But we’ve also seen results — and we’ve learned some great new fitness techniques and habits.

And just in time for the 2010 golf season, too! :-)

In-Depth Golf Instruction to Help Your Game

Our golf clinics, described here, are an inexpensive way to tune up your game.

But what if you want more in-depth help?

No problem. Just sign up for our Golf Instructional Series, a program that provides four hours total of instruction offered over two sessions. You get “hands on” instruction in a small group setting — enabling the pros to give you more personal attention and focus than in our clinics.

We’re offering two Instructional Series programs this year.

Saving Strokes

The Saving Strokes Series is geared toward more experienced golfers.

Tuesdays, May 25 & June 1
6:00 – 8:00 pm @ Irondequoit Country Club

Rochester women, improve your golf game!

They’re back!

One of the great things about our EWGA chapter is our golf clinics. They are a great way to tune up your game and meet area teaching pros!

And they are priced very reasonably.

The rules clinic on April 27 is free to members, and only $10 for non-members. (Scroll down for some exciting news about that clinic!)

All of the other clinics are $10 for EWGA members and $15 for non-members. Even better: members who bring a guest can register for only $5!

So mark your calendars — and download your clinic registration form here.

  • Driving Clinic @ Irondequoit Country Club, April 24 (Sat.) 4-5:00 pm, Brian Jacobs, PGA Professional.
  • Rules, Etiquette & Handicaps @ Ravenwood Golf Club, April 27 (Tues.) 6-7:30 pm, Todd Riolo – PGA Professional. EWGA league members are strongly encouraged to attend this clinic.
  • Putting Clinic @ Ravenwood Golf Club, May 8 (Sat.) 8:30-9:30 am, Ann Pangman Esterman – LPGA Professional.
  • Sand Shots & Pitching Clinic @ Champion Hills, May 12 (Wed.) 6-7:00 pm, Darlene Sommer – LPGA Professional.
  • Iron Clinic @ Genesee Valley Park Golf Course, May 22 (Sat.) 12–1:00 pm, Tom Bolduc, PGA Professional.
  • Chipping Clinic @ Ravenwood Golf Club, June 19 (Sat.) 8:30-9:30 am, Ann Pangman Esterman, LPGA Professional. NOTE: The date for this clinic was originally June 12. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Not your mother’s rules clinic ;-)

We’re particularly excited about our 2010 Rules, Etiquette, and Handicaps Clinic.

This year, we’re combining socializing with a “hands on” session on golf rules and etiquette. We’ll be heading out onto the course at Ravenwood, where Todd Riolo will give us tips on things like proper dropping procedures.

Ravenwood will be offering some food and drink specials.

And for the grand finale, our chapter Handicap Chair, Wendy Bolton, will do a presentation on how to use the EWGA handicap service.

This is a don’t-miss event!

There is no registration fee for EWGA members for our Rules Clinic.

If you are playing in one of our leagues . . .

. . . we strongly encourage you to attend the rules clinic.

Learning rules and golf etiquette is such an important part of golf. Playing in our leagues gives you a chance to practice the rules in a supportive setting. So start the year out right by attending this important clinic!

UPDATE: The date for the chipping clinic at Ravenwood has been changed to June 19. We apologize for any inconvenience.

So what do you get when you join, exactly?

We’ve been getting emails from Rochester women who want to know more about the EWGA. What will you get when you join?

You get golf!

The purpose of our association is summed up by the EWGA tagline: Connect, Learn, Play, Belong.

Our EWGA chapter gives Rochester women golfers opportunities to learn the game of golf, play the game of golf, and meet other women who also love to play. It’s also a great way to network–the majority of our members are area professionals.

In addition to the soft benefits, women who join our chapter are eligible for a number of discounts.

Discounts on women’s golf services, products, education, rounds

We did the math, and it was an eye-opener.

By joining EWGA, you receive up to $270 in savings on golf-related products and services this year, right here in Rochester.

  • Seven EWGA Chapter Clinics @ $5 off per clinic: you save $35
  • Two EWGA Chapter Instructional Series @ $25 off per clinic: you save $50
  • USGA Handicap Index through the EWGA Golf Life Management System (GLMS), free with your membership: $30 value
  • Joining a league? Save $25
  • Golf fitness class discount: save $20
  • Need golf shoes? A-GAME Sports discount on women’s golf shoes: up to $50
  • GolfTEC lesson package: 20% off: $60 (double the national GolfTEC discount)

And that’s just here in town. There are other discounts negotiated by EWGA national (check their site often as this list grows all the time). Examples: 25% off Tail Activewear women’s golf clothing; 10% off Sporty Chic golf clothing; 10% off Liberty Mutual auto or home insurance; 10% discount on selected Golfsmith products; 15% discount at 1800 flowers.

[Members: to see these discounts, you need to go to the EWGA national site and log onto the Members Clubhouse (formerly calls Members Only). Do check it out if you haven't, recently -- they've added quite a few additional discounts.]

Given today’s uncertain economy, it’s nice to know that joining EWGA is an investment in your game.

EWGA Championship

Another benefit of joining is that you can participate in the EWGA Championship Tournament: the largest women’s amateur tournament in the world.

The EWGA Championship, which includes stroke and scramble team format play, is open only to EWGA members. It’s a flighted tournament — which means women of any skill level can play.

That makes it a great way to experience competitive golf!

Any member of our chapter can play in the first round, our Chapter Championship, July 17 at Mill Creek. Two women from each of the four stroke play flights, and one scramble team, can advance to the regionals on August 21 in Springfield, Mass.

Connecting with other women golfers: Priceless!

Joining the EWGA also enables you to connect with other women golfers. Through our Fairway Friends mentoring program, leagues, golf events, networking events, and the EWGA Championship, you have the opportunity to form business connections and lasting friendships, all through the great game of golf!

Questions about joining? Click here, fill out the contact form, and our membership chair will be happy to drop you an email or give you a call.
