It was an exciting week for Rochester’s EWGA chapter!

Member Lisa Hoynowski got a hole in one on Wednesday (May 19) while playing our Victor Hills League.

Lisa’s ace came on the East Course #9 (formerly #17), which plays 95 yards from the red tees.

Because this was an EWGA-sanctioned event, the hole in one qualifies Lisa for the EWGA Troon Hole-in-One Club and a complimentary round for four at a Troon golf facility.

Congratulations, Lisa!

Hey, we've added a daytime women's golf league!

Wish you could play in a league that tees off during the day?

You’re in luck! We’re now offering a daytime league!

This 9-hole league will play at Lima Golf and Country Club on Thursdays, June 3 to August 19 (12 weeks), and will tee off at 11:00AM.

It will be a fun league. We’ll coordinate foursomes as players check in at 10:40AM. After each round, you’re invited to stay for lunch, socialization, and relaxation.

The league will alternate between the Charleston Pines and Island Oaks as coordinated by the pro-shop.

We are offering online registration for this event!

The cost to join this league is $180 for EWGA Members and $216 for Non-Members. (Please note that if you want to pay by credit card or Paypal, there will be an additional $7.00 processing fee.)

Click here to access the online registration form. You can use the form to select your payment option.

This league starts in less than three weeks! If you want to join, please get us your registration by May 24!

Our Weekend Travel League Is About to Start

One of the benefits of joining Rochester’s EWGA chapter is our Weekend Travel League.

It’s a great way for our members to meet and network with other Rochester women golfers — plus try out a variety of Rochester golf courses.

We also vary the days we play (some weekends we play on Saturdays, some weekends we play on Sundays) and the tee times (we usually go off early afteroon, but sometimes play earlier) to accommodate as many peoples’ schedules as possible over the season.

Already a Member?

Then you don’t have to do a thing!

The Monday before the round, you’ll receive an email with information about the course, tee times, and greens fees for the coming weekend. Just respond to the email by 12:00 PM Thursday to reserve your spot. (Pay your greens fees to the course when you arrive to play.)

Not a Member? How About Joining?

The Weekend Travel League is open only to EWGA members (and their guests).

So if this league format fits your schedule and lifestyle, why not join EWGA?

You’ll also receive discounts on our golf events and instruction, and can participate in the EWGA Championship Tournament.

Rochester women new to golf? There is still some room in our beginners league!

One of the great things about the EWGA is that we provide opportunities to help beginning women golfers learn the game.

That’s why we’re so pleased to have a beginner’s golf league again this year.

And the good news? We still have a couple of spots left in the league!

This six-week league runs May 25 – June 29, and costs $105 for EWGA members and $125 non-members. Carts are included. The league will play at
Champion Hills, the newest private course in the Rochester area, under the guidance of LPGA Pro Darlene Sommer .

The first week will feature an introduction to the course and other players, orientation and the opportunity to play a few holes. Weeks 2 – 6 will be 9 holes regular stroke play.

Players tee off beginning at 5:30. USGA Handicaps (GHIN or GLMS) are encouraged, but not required.

Click here to download Champion Hills league registration form.

So what do you get when you join, exactly?

We’ve been getting emails from Rochester women who want to know more about the EWGA. What will you get when you join?

You get golf!

The purpose of our association is summed up by the EWGA tagline: Connect, Learn, Play, Belong.

Our EWGA chapter gives Rochester women golfers opportunities to learn the game of golf, play the game of golf, and meet other women who also love to play. It’s also a great way to network–the majority of our members are area professionals.

In addition to the soft benefits, women who join our chapter are eligible for a number of discounts.

Discounts on women’s golf services, products, education, rounds

We did the math, and it was an eye-opener.

By joining EWGA, you receive up to $270 in savings on golf-related products and services this year, right here in Rochester.

  • Seven EWGA Chapter Clinics @ $5 off per clinic: you save $35
  • Two EWGA Chapter Instructional Series @ $25 off per clinic: you save $50
  • USGA Handicap Index through the EWGA Golf Life Management System (GLMS), free with your membership: $30 value
  • Joining a league? Save $25
  • Golf fitness class discount: save $20
  • Need golf shoes? A-GAME Sports discount on women’s golf shoes: up to $50
  • GolfTEC lesson package: 20% off: $60 (double the national GolfTEC discount)

And that’s just here in town. There are other discounts negotiated by EWGA national (check their site often as this list grows all the time). Examples: 25% off Tail Activewear women’s golf clothing; 10% off Sporty Chic golf clothing; 10% off Liberty Mutual auto or home insurance; 10% discount on selected Golfsmith products; 15% discount at 1800 flowers.

[Members: to see these discounts, you need to go to the EWGA national site and log onto the Members Clubhouse (formerly calls Members Only). Do check it out if you haven't, recently -- they've added quite a few additional discounts.]

Given today’s uncertain economy, it’s nice to know that joining EWGA is an investment in your game.

EWGA Championship

Another benefit of joining is that you can participate in the EWGA Championship Tournament: the largest women’s amateur tournament in the world.

The EWGA Championship, which includes stroke and scramble team format play, is open only to EWGA members. It’s a flighted tournament — which means women of any skill level can play.

That makes it a great way to experience competitive golf!

Any member of our chapter can play in the first round, our Chapter Championship, July 17 at Mill Creek. Two women from each of the four stroke play flights, and one scramble team, can advance to the regionals on August 21 in Springfield, Mass.

Connecting with other women golfers: Priceless!

Joining the EWGA also enables you to connect with other women golfers. Through our Fairway Friends mentoring program, leagues, golf events, networking events, and the EWGA Championship, you have the opportunity to form business connections and lasting friendships, all through the great game of golf!

Questions about joining? Click here, fill out the contact form, and our membership chair will be happy to drop you an email or give you a call.

Rochester EWGA 2010 Chapter Kick-Off Brunch

Participating in the EWGA Championship is one benefit of membership, and you might even win a trophy like one of these!

EWGA Member Benefit: you get a golf handicap

Do you have a handicap?

If you’re relatively new to golf — or have only played casual golf — the answer is probably “no.”

Guess what?

You should!

Having a handicap can make the game of golf more interesting and enjoyable. Handicaps let you:

  • Track your progress. As you work on your game, your handicap will go down, giving you concrete feedback on your success.
  • Understand courses better. Each course you play is also rated according to difficulty. Once you know your handicap, you get a better idea of how you can expect to score on that course.
  • Make competitions more fair. Having a handicap lets you play against golfers of any skill level. Suppose a person with a high handicap is playing with a person with a low handicap. By “giving strokes” to the high handicapper (essentially subtracting strokes from that person’s score) you “even the playing field.” You make it possible for the high handicapper to win the game, just by playing a round that is good for her skill level.
  • Play in more events. Some tournaments and leagues require all players to have a handicap. (The EWGA Championship tournament is one example; some of our chapter leagues also require players to maintain a handicap.)

So how do you get a handicap?

It’s not hard at all! And as an EWGA member, you receive a USGA Handicap Index through the EWGA Golf Life Management System (GLMS), free with your membership (a $30 value).

Once you’ve signed up for the GLMS, just log on after you’ve played either a 9- or 18-hole round and key in your scores. The GLMS system does all the rest.

You do have 2 responsibilities . . .

Like many other aspects of the game of golf, handicapping is an honors system.

To be fair to other players, you need to try to make the best score you can, every hole of every round you play — and you must post scores for every round you play.

Do that, and your handicap index will be accurate, so that when you do play in competitions, they’re fair for everyone who participates.

New EWGA members: click here for information on how to activate your GLMS account.
